3.2 Teacher Qualifications

Section 53 – (1) (b) the qualifications required of teachers at that school

The standard requires that teachers in registered schools must be registered within the provisions of the Teachers Registration Act 2000.

In order to meet the Standard, a school will have to demonstrate that its teachers meet the requirements for registration under the provisions of the Teachers Registration Act 2000 by holding either:

  1. a current Certificate of Registration; or
  2. a current Limited Authority to Teach, or
  3. a current Certificate of Provisional Registration.

It is desirable that teachers teaching in the first three years of schooling possess either an early childhood specialisation or a background in primary education.

The determination of the appropriate number of teachers should take into account the number and kind of students enrolled in the school and should not be significantly less than required to give a ratio equivalent to that currently applying in government schools in Tasmania.

The following minimum ratios of registered teachers to students are the standards for registered school.

Basic teacher/student ratios are:

Primary (including kindergarten) 1:23
Secondary Years 7–10 1:17
Secondary Years 11–12 1:16
